Breed Profile
The Miniature Schnauzer has become one the most popular breeds for a household pet.
We cannot give enough praise to this breed. They are friendly and spirited yet eager to
be obedient to commands and willing to please. Miniature Schnauzers are very
intelligent. World renowned dog expert Stanley Coren's list the Miniature Schnauzer as
12th on a list of 80 intelligent dogs.
Miniature Schnauzers are extremely alert. This makes them an excellent watch dog. They
are not by nature aggressive, however, most are relatively fearless. Schnauzers are not
random or incessant barkers. As they mature most will develop a strong territorial
instinct in which they will defend vocally rather than physically. A good Miniature
Schnauzer will bark at anyone who seems to be a threat. Once you assure them that all is
well, they should accept that you are in control of the situation and be silent. If you are
not present, most Miniature Schnauzers will bark until what they consider to be a threat is
gone. This is what makes a Miniature Schnauzer a good watch dog.
While not being 100% non-shedding, due to their minimal shedding and less dander, they
are practically non-allergenic. making them a good companion for the young and old,
single and family alike
A Miniature Schnauzer should be brushed every other day and groomed approximately
every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain their Schnauzer cut.
Size and Color
Miniature Schnauzers have a small, squarely proportioned body with a long neck and
rectangular head. The American Kennel Club breed standard for Miniature Schnauzers
calls for the height at the withers (shoulder blades) to be at least 12" and no more than
14". No particular weight is specified for the breed. Weight depends on the dog's size,
muscle, and bone structure. Typically a dog measuring between 12" to 14" will weigh
between 12 and 20 pounds. There is no set standard for the Toy Schnauzer, however we
consider the toy size to be 7 to 11 pounds. The Toy Schnauzer is not a separate breed
and they are "NOT RUNTS". The Toy Schnauzer is simply a smaller size Miniature
Schnauzer. The Toy Schnauzer is intetionally bred to be smaller in size and are
exceptional in every way. The American Kennel Club will allow registration of the Toy
size Miniature Schnauzer, however, at this time they will not allow a Miniature
Schnauzer under 12" in the show ring.
Miniature Schnauzers come in many different colors. Salt and Pepper, Black and Silver,
Solid Black, Solid White, Solid Liver (Chocolate), Black and White Parti, Liver and
White Parti, and Pepper and White Parti. The American Kennel Club will allow
registration of all these colors, however, at this time, the American Kennel Club only
allows Salt and Pepper, Black and Silver, and Solid Black to enter the show ring.
Feeding Your New Puppy
You will be provided with a 4 day supply of the food that your puppy is currently eating.
If you plan to change your puppy's food to another food than the one that is provided,
please continue to feed your puppy the food that was provided for a minimum of 2 days,
then on day 3 mix 1/2 of the food provided with 1/2 of the new food of your choice for
the next 2 days, and then change to the new food completely. If you change your puppy's
food too rapidly, your puppy is likely to get diarrhea. Be sure that your puppy does not
become dehydrated by giving him or her access to plenty of drinking water. You will be
provided with a detailed feeding schedule along with much more helpful information
prior to your puppy's arrival.
